Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of plotting a military coup in September and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a safety action after recent developments were revealed.

This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a document approving the arrest, the judge said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His son, Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a gathering of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on social media on Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could offer prayers for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's decision was the potential of Bolsonaro's move to foreign missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a background of organizing to seek refuge through a consular facility", a declaration said.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of heading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to assassinate his opponent and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was stopped because it couldn't obtain the backing of the military leaders. The current president was sworn in without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, numerous his followers stormed and vandalised official structures in the national capital, Brasília.

The security forces intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, restore order and return him to office.

At the period, the legal team called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from running for public office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 national vote.
