RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of entry passages leading to the depot... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces participating in this strike for their skill and their valour," he commented. "They were among numerous UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
